My Writing: Writing in the Dark (Sestina Poem)

This is a poem I wrote last semester about the written word. In order to challenge myself (because I intentionally like making my life difficult), I chose to write a sestina poem, where the last word of each line is repeated in each stanza but in a different order. It's hard to explain, but once you look at the poem, you'll see what I mean. The hardest part of this type of poem is making the word fit at the end of the sentence in a believable way.

Writing in the Dark

It’s always at the beginning of the night
that his thoughts begin to run wild and words
come more easily, flowing from hand to pen.
He has tried to write in the morning but there is no silence.
There are too many demanding noises, too much bright light
and so it is in darkness that he always writes.

On his brand new computer, the man writes,
his fingers slipping on the yet unused keys in the dark of night.
The shadows are strong this evening, they are stealing the light,
or are they the demons of his past come to haunt his words?
He listens. For something. For anything. But there is only silence.
The man closes his computer and grabs a pen.

Beautifully constructed, trusty, bronze, perfect grip, his pen
has never failed him when he writes.
He likes the sound of pen on paper in the silence.
It seems as if hours have passed in the night,
and still he has not written a single word.
Looking at the clock, it is still several hours ‘til there is light.

His lined notepad glares blankly at him in the dull light.
How long has he been holding this pen?
How long has he been pretending that the words
have been coming to him? That he actually writes?
For months, he has been staring out the window at night,
but it is hard to pretend when alone and in silence.

It is hard to pretend when there is too much silence.
The man has never feared the light,
but now he fears he may run out of night.
His fingers firmly grip his barely-used pen,
hoping to squeeze out any inspiration to write.
All the man wants are beautiful words.

Unexpectedly there’s a spark and they come to him – the words.
The ones he has been waiting for all his life in silence.
The ink flows onto the paper, the sound is soothing. He writes
for once unconcerned about the upcoming daylight.
Nothing can stop the man and his pen.
He knows it will be the first time he writes beyond the night.

As the man writes his precious words,
he no longer fears the night, nor its companion, silence.
He sees himself in a new light: a writer; he is his pen.

Thanks for reading it! I hope you liked it!

Inspired By: The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries returns tonight! The second half of the fourth season continues and I couldn't be more excited! If you're unfamiliar with this show it's about Elena, a high school girl who is a doppelganger, which means her blood is special. Her best friends are Caroline and Bonnie, and her handsome love interests are Stefan and Damon, two vampire brothers.

There's drama, blood and gore, magic, romance, mystery, love triangles, vampires, werewolves, hybrids, fun flashbacks, and a twist in almost every single episode. If you don't get queasy and are looking for a show with a bit of bite to it (ha!) then this is certainly the show for you!

Elena
Inspired By: The Vampire Diaries -- Elena
{Click above for item info}

Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev) is a normal girl who is overprotective of her younger brother and loyal to a fault. At the start of the show, her parents had just died; still reeling from the loss months later she finds comfort in the mysterious new guy, Stefan. As time goes on, she falls for both Stefan and his older brother, Damon.

Elena sticks to henley tops in moody colors, like plum, jeans, and Converse. But in Mystic Falls, there are always parties to attend and she loves to dress up; opt for a black lace dress, black pumps, and drop earrings, or a white dress, nude t-strap heels, and a feather in your hair.

Caroline
Inspired By: The Vampire Diaries -- Caroline
Caroline Forbes (played by Candice Accola) is the daugher of the sheriff; she has no problem speaking her mind and telling her friends exactly what they need to hear. Originally jealous of Elena and the fact that men always wanted to be with her, Caroline has matured and found love herself. For a casual day, stick to an army green jacket, a loose tank top, black jeans, and black knee high boots. Or for going out, don a skin tight red peplum dress with sexy ankle-strap heels, or a sparkly sleeveless dress with a cardigan, silver cuff, and nude heels.

Bonnie
Inspired By: The Vampire Diaries -- Bonnie
Bonnie Bennett (played by Kat Graham) is Elena's best friend. She is calm in the face of danger and stands up for herself and her friends. Bonnie learns that she comes from a long line of witches and her grandmother teaches her how to use her powers. Over time, she becomes a very powerful witch. To dress like Bonnie, wear a teal lace dress with a brown blazer, green lace-up booties, and stone necklace. Or throw on a printed tank top, gray structed sweater, jeans, and gray flats. For a fancy affair, don a lacey black dress and strappy heels.

Stefen & Damon
Inspired By: The Vampire Diaries -- Stefan & Damon
Stefan and Damon Salvatore (played by Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder respectively) are vampire brothers who were turned by Katherine (also played by Nina Dobrev) in 1864. The two brothers fall for Elena because she resembles Katherine, the woman who they both fell for all those years ago. Stefan is kind and loyal; Damon is impulsive and a loner, but both are protective. To dress like the brothers, wear a leather jacket, henleys and shirts in shades of blue and green, dark wash jeans, and black boots or booties.

Guest Post: Dressing with the Stars {Very}

Hey guys! The following is a guest post from the UK store Very!
The little black dress is as much a part of the festive season as mince pies and tinsel. To view at first hand one of the most iconic examples of all time, head to London's Victoria and Albert Museum where 130 fabulously famous film costumes, dating from 1912 through to the present day, are currently on display.
Proving to be one of the most popular exhibits of "Hollywood Costumes" is the Hubert De Givenchy-designed black dress that Audrey Hepburn wore to such dazzling effect in the classic 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's. A production five years in the making, this fascinating exhibition also gives visitors the chance to get close up and personal with many other celebrated costumes, many of which have never been revealed to the public before. From Hollywood's Golden Age comes Judy Garland's blue-and-white gingham pinafore dress featured in The Wizard of Oz, the beaded red dress Joan Crawford donned in The Bride Wore Red, Scarlett O'Hara's green "curtain" dress designed by Walter Plunkett for Gone with the Wind and Marilyn Monroe's white halter neck from The Seven Year Itch, here buffeted by hot air pumped from below.
Fast forward a couple of decades and audiences will be thrilled by more contemporary offerings like Harrison Ford's felt hat and leather jacket from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Daniel Craig's tuxedo from Casino Royale, Uma Thurman's yellow Kill Bill jumpsuit, Johnny Depp's outfit from Pirates of the Caribbean and the striking green dress worn by Keira Knightley in the Oscar-winning Atonement.
This is far from a static exhibition, however. Displayed in three dramatically-lit rooms, each costume is brought to life thanks to music, montages, film clips, projections and interviews, both with the stars and the designers themselves.
Anyone who is suitably inspired to have their own Breakfast at Tiffany's moment this festive season - and go out to buy black dresses of their own - should check out the fabulous range available at Very this year.

Outfit: Favoritism

Purple is my favorite color. Any shade of purple: dark purple, lilac, magenta, violet, you name it, I love it. So in honor of my favoritism, I loaded up on purple when I went out to run some quick errands; Dunkin' Donuts, return a Redbox movie (I got ParaNorman! so fun!), and drove my brother, Leo, to Radio Shack.
As you can see, it was snowing and the snow got progressively heavier as time went on. Oddly enough, it wasn't really that cold. The cold air was calm and refreshing.
