Movies I Want To See (January 2013)

Woohoo! It's a new year! And that means a new crop of movies are coming out! I think 2012 was a fantastic year for movies, (The Hunger Games, The Avengers, Life of Pi, Lincoln, The Dark Knight Rises, Silver Linings Playbook, etc.) so let's see if 2013 can top all that. I have high hopes!

Struck By Lightning
Based on the novel by Chis Colfer, Colfer himself plays a high student named Carson Phillips, who in the last few weeks of his life (before getting struck by lightening) was blackmailing the popular kids into submitting stories to his literary magazine. Cast includes Rebel Wilson, Sarah Hyland, Christina Hendricks, and Dermot Mulroney. Looks like a fun and at times heartrending movie. (January 1)

Rent on iTunes here.

Gangster Squad
The year is 1949, the place is Los Angeles, and the man in charge is ruthless mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), who makes money off drugs, guns, prostitution, and gambling. He has most of the police and politicians under his thumb, except for a small group of LAPD led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling). Also starring Emma Stone and Nick Nolte. Hollywood glamour, drama, and action; sign me up! (January 11)

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
Fifteen years after the folktale we've all come to know, Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) are all grown up and are now bounty hunters. They track and take down witches easily since spells and curses don't affect them, though they don't know why or how. When an evil sorceress (Famke Janssen) kidnaps children to sacrifice them during the Blood Moon, Hansel and Gretel must make their way to Augsburg, Germany to stop her. This looks like it will be ridiculously entertaining. (January 11)

LUV
11-year-old Woody Watson (Michael Rainy Jr.) lives with his grandmother because his mother is in rehab and his father isn't in his life, so when his charismatic uncle Vincent (Common) is released from prison and wants to straighten out his life, Woody gets a father figure and a crash course on what it means to be a man, but will he follow in his uncle's footsteps or choose to be his own man? This film looks moving, dramatic, frightening, and unforgettable. (January 18)

Parker
Like a mix of The Transporter and Oceans 11, this movie follows Parker (Jason Statham), a professional theif with a code: don't steal from people who can't afford it and don't hurt people who don't deserve it. But those rules are getting in the way for the rest of his crew, so they double cross him and leave him for dead. Out for revenge, Parker tracks them to Palm Beach, where his old crew is planning their next heist. There he meets Lesie (Jennifer Lopez), who will help take them down for a cut of the money. (January 25)
