I love when my great books are turned into movies! It's so fascinating seeing how someone else has translated into onto the big screen. Sure, there are going to be differences (because how I imagine something in my head is going to be different from how someone else does), but I always like seeing books come to life. Sometimes it gives me a whole new appreciation for the book.
I read The Giver in 6th grade and re-read it a few months ago in anticipation of the film release. I really loved it both times, but it is a short book and I think more could've been added to it to make it more intense, so I think the filmmakers are going to do just that. Also, I'm excited to see The Maze Runner because the book was exciting to read and I love Dylan O'Brien!
The Giver
Written by Lois Lowry, The Giver is about Jonas, a teenager who lives in an ideal but colorless world that thrives on conformity. After he is given the life assignment as the next Receiver of Memory, he starts to see things differently, and that their ideal world is not as ideal as he was led to believe.
Since no one can see color, they all wear colorless clothing, so put on a beige dress, a silver cuff, and white lace oxfords. Or instead wear an oatmeal-colored cardigan, a white blouse, beige pants, a red watch, and red flats (because the first color Jonas sees is red). (Release Date: August 15)

Dark Places
Written by Gillian Flynn (author of Gone Girl), Dark Places follows Libby Day, twenty-five years after her mother and sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas." She testified that her brother, Ben, committed the crime, but after the Kill Club, a secret society, probes her for answers, a different truth starts to emerge.
Dress like the dark, moody cover by wearing a teal sweater, destroyed denim, a lock and key necklace, a skull ring, and brown booties. Or wear a gray open cardigan, a teal dress, skull earrings, and navy flats. (Release Date: September 1)

This Is Where I Leave You
Written by Jonathan Tropper, This is Where I Leave You is about a dysfunctional family who comes together to sit shiva for seven days after Judd Foxman's father dies. While mourning the death of his father, he's also mourning the death of his marriage after he found out that his wife was having an affair.
Go for some color by wearing a yellow sleeveless blouse, green stone necklace, black jeans, yellow sneakers, and heartbroken ring. Or instead don a striped colorful dress, teal earrings, and black flats. (Release Date: September 12)

The Maze Runner
Written by James Dashner, The Maze Runner follows Thomas who wakes up in a maze surrounded by other boys who also only remember their names. He soon comes to discover the maze is full of monsters and is ever-changing, so they have no idea how to get out and no one who has stayed out past night has come back alive.
Blend in while running the maze by wearing a gray t-shirt, a green vest, olive jeans, a watch to keep track of the time, mixed metal rings, and camoflauge sneakers. Or be comfy and casual in spike earrings, a striped shirt, black sweatpants, a spike ring, and polka dot sneakers. (Release Date: September 19)

Which of these books have you read?
Which movies do you want to see?
I think that the Giver is my favorite outfit set!
ReplyDeleteI love everything form This Is Where I Leave You set! Such fun colors!

I love when you do these! And all of these outfits are killer (and even inspiring me to get dressed for the movies tonight! :D)
ReplyDeleteI want to be excited about The Giver, but I'm just not. It's like somewhere someone came down and mandated that ALL MOVIES/BOOKS MUST BE LONG/EPIC TO BE GOOD and it makes me sad.
All of the neutral tones for The Giver are so far from what I would normally wear but I am loving all of those pieces! Have you read any of the companion novels by Lois Lowry? Also, that Gillian Flynn novel sounds intriguing. I haven't given any of her books a read yet. I love that skull ring in the Dark Places set so much.
ReplyDeleteI also read The Giver in middle school, but I admit I didn't like it all that much. What I do like is the neutral outfits you picked out for your inspired looks!

Most often I find books turned into movies to be disappointing movies - the one exception is Stardust, where the movie somehow actually improved on the book. But it's a very rare exception. I am interested in seeing The Give evern so. But, surprise surprise, the favourite outfit is the one your put together for Dark Places :)

I actually haven't read any of these! I am very much looking forward to seeing The Maze Runner, though. It looks like it'll be a really good movie! I'm going to try seeing the movie first and then reading the book. I did that with the first Percy Jackson movie and it actually worked out in my favor - I enjoyed the movie because I had no expectations going in, and then I enjoyed the book even more because as I read it, I realized the movie was very different and not nearly as good! We'll see how it goes this time.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Dark Places was being made into a movie!! Whoa! I love Flynn's books! (I've read them all!) I love the clothes you picked for The Giver and This is where I Leave You! I'd wear all those! (And the MazeRunner too!)
ReplyDeleteI want BOTH of those shoes from the Giver set! Although I've heard of all of these books, I haven't read any. I'm so behind on my reading, my list of must reads just keeps getting longer and longer!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a good movie! Hope you enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteMe too!
ReplyDeleteThanks! The Giver is a really fast read!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jess! I only found out recently about the movie too!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea! No expectations!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Stardust! It's one of my favorite movies! They changed a lot in The Giver, but when I was always reading it I wanted more and they delivered on that in a way that felt believable and true to the story. I really enjoyed the movie and already want to see it again!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
ReplyDeleteNo, I haven't read her other books, but I've always wanted to! I definitely think I will!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kristin! From the trailer, it comes off as really epic, but when you're watching it its emotional and moving and doesn't feel like a huge epic movie (only a part of it when Jonas is running away at the end), but for the most part it stays true to the feeling of the book. Yes, a lot was changed, but it really felt like they were adding because it is a slim book and I always wanted there to be more to it. I really enjoyed the movie and I already want to watch it again for things that I might have missed!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alissa!
ReplyDeleteYay! Did you see it? I loved the movie!
