Inspired By: The Great Gatsby

Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is a novel set in 1922 in New York and is about the American Dream, lost love, hope, success, luxury, and the immorality of the wealthy. Although the main character is Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who throws lavish parties every weekend, it is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway, a young man who is neighbors with Gatsby and who hopes to make it in the bond business, but gets swept up in the fast-paced, dazzling life of the rich.

I'm so excited because the film is coming out tomorrow!

Check out this "rough draft" of The Great Gatsby from Shit Rough Drafts! So funny!

Jay Gatsby
Inspired By: Jay Gatsby
Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a wealthy man who throws expensive weekend-long parties every weekend with alcohol flowing freely (it was the Prohibition Era, so it was illegal), but he's a mystery -- no one knows who he really is, where he comes from, and how he makes his money. As the story goes on,  Gatsby tells Nick who he actually is and what he's after. What could a man with seemingly everything  really want?

Daisy Buchanan
Inspired By: Daisy Buchanan
Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) is a rich, selfish and careless young woman who lives in East Egg, the fashionable side of town, with her husband, Tom Buchanan. She lives directly across the bay from Gatsby's mansion. Five years earlier, she met a young WWI officer named Jay Gatsby and fell in love, but went on to marry Tom.

Nick Carraway
Inspired By: Nick Carraway
Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is an easygoing and optimistic young man from Minnesota who, after being educated at Yale and fighting in World War I, goes to New York to learn the bond business. He is neighbors with Gatsby and second cousins with Daisy. By the end, Nick is the only one who knows Gatsby's true past.

Jordan Baker
Inspired By: Jordan Baker
Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki) is a energetic but aloof young woman who is a professional golfer and Daisy's long-time friend. She and Nick start a romantic relationship. Jordan represents one of the "new women" of the 1920's.

Myrtle Wilson & Tom Buchanan
Inspired By: Myrtle Wilson & Tom Buchanan
Myrtle Wilson (Isla Fisher) is a woman who lives with her car repairman husband, George, but she's also the mistress of Tom Buchanan, Daisy's arrogant, domineering husband. Tom (Joel Edgerton) is a man who believes he can do what he wants because he's wealthy, and will do what he has to in order to keep his idyllic life as it is.

  1. What a fun series of looks, Sara! I've never been a huge fan of The Great Gatsby story, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie just for the costumes... and I'd love to wear everything in your Jordan Baker look, although that's not a huge surprise, as she is my favourite character in the story :)
