Movies I Want To See (March 2013)

Once again, I wish I could go to the movie theater every weekend this month! Last month, I was lucky enough to see Warm Bodies, Identity Thief, and Beautiful Creatures! I would recommend them all. This month I particularly want to see Oz the Great and Powerful.

Jack the Giant Slayer
This action / adventure movie stars Nicholas Holt as Jack, a farmhand who accidentally opens a gateway between our world and a revengeful race of giants who mean to take back the land they once lost. Jack is forced to stop creatures he thought only existed in fairy tales before they can take control, while also fighting for the hand of a brave princess (Eleanor Tomlinson). (March 1)

Oz the Great and Powerful
A prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the story follows Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a circus magician, who is flown to the Land of Oz by a hot air balloon. He believes he's hit the jackpot of fame and fortune until he meets three witches (Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, and Rachel Weisz), who don't think he's the great wizard that everyone's expecting. Can he help save the Land of Oz, figure out who is good and who is evil, and transform himself in the Wizard of Oz? This film looks so vibrant and multi-layered and I can't wait to see it! (March 8)

From Up on Poppy Hill
From Up on Poppy Hill is a coming-of-age story set in Yokohama in 1963 as Japan is picking itself up from the devastation of World War II and preparing to host the 1964 Olympics. It follows Umi and Shun, who get caught up in the changing times, but a secret threatens to pull them apart. Since I loved Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, I'm so excited to see this one! (March 15)

Upside Down
It's an alternative universe where two worlds are so close, yet so far away. These two worlds have their own gravity and people from one world cannot "stick" to the other. A young man (Jim Sturgess) from the "Down" world battles the laws of physics and prejudice to reunite with his long-lost love (Kirsten Dunst) from the "Up" world. Can love conquer gravity? I've already seen this unique movie; it's fun and romantic with a hint of sci-fi. I really liked it! (March 15)

Admission
The comedy-drama follows Portia Nathan (Tina Fey), a Princeton University admissions officer, who visits an alternative high school overseen by a former classmate, the laidback John Pressman (Paul Rudd). John has guessed that Jeremiah (Nat Wolf), a gifted student, might be the son that Portia secretly gave up for adoption years ago. Portia finds herself bending the rules for Jeremiah and putting at risk the life she thought she wanted. While comedic, this movie looks like it will pull on those heart strings as well. (March 22)

The Host
Based on a novel by Stephanie Meyer, The Host shows the story of our world when it's been overrun by parasitic aliens and we are their hosts. Melanie (Soairse Ronan) gets captured and becomes a host to Wanderer, or Wanda. While fighting for one mind and body, Wanda learns that Melanie loved a young man named Jared (Max Irons) and goes in search of him, only to find a group of unpossessed humans surviving in the desert. Can humans keep fighting for their survival? (March 29)

  2. I really want to see the Oz movie. Although I do have to admit that I never cared for The Wizard of Oz. In fact, I am not sure I've actually made it through watching the entire movie.
