MY REVIEW
When I was asked to review Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One with the Universe by Yumi Sakugawa, I was definitely intrigued. The first things that popped into my mind were: "Cool, an illustrated book," followed by, "How exactly does someone become one with the universe?"
On the back it says that this book is "a hand-drawn path to inner peace." We all use a little more inner peace, right?
I can't talk about an illustrated book and not first bring up the art. I'm a fan of the black and white, sketch-like style of the ink illustrations. The art is simple and dream-like (but still really cool) because it's focused on guiding you and that's why it stands out.
This guide helps you focus on yourself, taking pleasure in the little things, it's about letting go, and it's about feeling connected with other people and things and pretty much everything in the world. My favorite part of the whole book was about how "over the course of our lifetime we accumulate junk and become imprisoned by it." Not real, materialistic junk, but other stresses and I love what it says:

"Right this moment set on fire the things you no longer need. Start with the small things: your annoyances, your petty grudges, your daily stress, your pet peeves; watch them light on fire and become bright and beautiful things."
Beautiful, right?
It's hard to describe this book because it's the kind of book that means a something different to everyone who reads it. But I think it's a book that everyone can benefit from reading. Now and then we forget to appreciate the small things, we forget to take deep breaths, we forget to admire the beautiful sunset and not take a picture of it for Instagram. Let's reconnect with the world a little more.

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful and unusual book! The illustrations look really love and some of the concepts expressed are ones that are close to my heart from practising yoga for many years - but that doesn't mean I couldn't benefit from a reminder now and then ;)

The illustrations are beautiful. When I think of picture books I think of a children's book, but this just shows how even when we're all grown up we can still appreciate them :)
