Inspired By: Fairytale Reads

It seems I'm on a fairytale kick since I'm currently writing one. Honestly, I just love fairytale stories and retellings so much. Even if I'm reading a book I've never read before there's always an element of nostalgia when I read a fairytale because they're so ingrained in our culture. My classic favorites are of course Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Snow White. What are yours?

P.S. — Goodreads has a whole list of the best fairytales and retellings!

Cinder
Cinder
Written by Marissa Meyer; Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction.

THIS IS THE BEST SERIES! If you haven't read it, you definitely should. A futuristic, sci-fi series based on fairytales and it's glorious! Wear an outfit based on my favorite mechanic, Cinder: a gray sweater, distressed jeans, sunglasses (because she can see a lot more than us regular humans can), and red flats. Or go for something a little more fancy by putting on a black dress, rose ring, and red heels.

Fables Vol. 1: Legends in Exile
Fables
Written by Bill Willingham, Lan Medina, Steve Leialoha, Craig Hamilton, and James Jean; When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own secret society called Fabletown. But when Snow White's sister, Rose Red, is murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff to find the killer.

This is a fantastic and well thought out series about fairytale characters living in our world. Think Once Upon A Time, but with more blood and sex. Wear an outfit based on Snow White: a gray blazer, a white blouse, a red bow skirt, and black heels. Or throw on something based on the Big Bad Wolf: an olive jacket, a purple sweater, jeans, and lace-up boots.

Ella Enchanted
Ella Enchanted

Written by Gail Carson Levine; At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed with the "gift" of obedience. Anything anyone tells her to do, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, but not feisty Ella. When her beloved mother dies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, and later, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella's life and well-being seem to be in grave peril.

It's sad to say, but I've never read this! I've seen the movie with Anne Hathaway a ton of times because it's too cute for words, but I definitely need to read the book. For outfits with a bohemian feel wear a blue print dress, a floral blue necklace, a yellow scarf, and brown booties. Or instead put on a purple lace dress, a velvety teal scarf, a journal, and brown flats.

Beastly
Beastly
Written by Alex Flinn; Why did the witch turn me into a beast who hides by day and prowls by night? I'll tell you. I'll tell you how I used to be Kyle Kingsbury, the guy you wished you were, with money, perfect looks, and the perfect life. And then, I'll tell you how I became perfectly . . . beastly.

Alex Flinn's books are one of my guilty pleasures. They're a bit cheesy at times, but they're always a joy to read. Dress like bookish Lindy by wearing a pale green top, gray jeans, rose earrings, and pink flats. Or dress like the beastly Kyle in an open-shoulder burgundy sweater, black hooded vest, jeans, and black boots.
