6 Women That Inspire Me {Women's Month}

Common Room is celebrating International Women's Month all month long to highlight awesome ladies with women-centric prompts. This week's prompt is all about creative international women, so I wanted to take a look at creative women that have inspired me.

ONE | Taylor Swift
I've been a T-Swift fan since high school. It all began with her catchy romantic songs and then I realized what an awesome goofball she is and wished we could be BFFs. So not only is Taylor Swift goofy, quirky, not afraid to be herself, not afraid to make fun of herself (ie. Shake It Off), and genuine, but she's created a fan base of young women who build each other up instead of tearing each other down.

TWO | J.K. Rowling
Who didn't see this coming? Rowling is the woman who made me want to be a writer. It's not an exaggeration to say that the Harry Potter books changed my life (as it did for so many others) and I hope one day to create books that entertain and inspire like her books do for me. Plus she's so eloquent, she tweets encouraging responses to people, and tweets tidbits about the world of Harry Potter. What's not to love? (And she visited a library on a whim and made everyone's day!)

THREE | Lauren Conrad
It's crazy to think that she started out on a reality TV show, but Lauren Conrad used that fame to become a businesswoman and build an empire. Her name is now synonymous with pretty clothing and a lifestyle website by women that encourages other women to become better versions of themselves every day. She's a great role model, I love how into Halloween she is (she creates intricate costumes every year), and all of the clothes she makes are so beautiful.

FOUR | Emma Watson (and Hermione Granger)
Like the rest of the world, I first saw Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, a witch who is highly intelligent, clever, emotional, loyal, and an ambassador for those who don't have a voice of their own (hello house elves). Turns out Emma Watson and Hermione Granger have a lot in common because Watson is an advocate for women's rights and a bad-ass human being. And obviously an amazing actress.

FIVE | Alexis Lampley (@dropandgivemenerdy)
Alexis is a bookstagrammer whose lovely bookish and geektastic pictures inspire me to let my geek flag fly and to practice my photography. She is a super nice and super cool human being and she also recently published her first book called The Onyx Vial, which I can't wait to read, so the fact that she can write and care for her adorable baby gives me hope that I can get my act together to write my own novels.

SIX | Veronica Mars
Okay, I know she's not real and not all that creative (unless how you count how she tracks down bad guys), but I love that show and the movie and the novels. Veronica doesn't let anyone or anything get in the way of her pursuit of the truth, she's confident, she's intelligent, she's not afraid to be emotional and scared, she cares about all people, and she has the best witty comebacks. Can I just be her?

What creative women have inspired you?

Dear Reader, Who Are You? Pt. 5

Well, I haven't done one of these in a while. I figured with the holidays here and that warm, fuzzy feeling taking over that it was the perfect time to get to know everyone a little bit more.

I would love to know:
  • what you're currently reading
  • a book you recommend
  • a present you want for the holidays
  • your favorite holiday movie
  • a 2016 goal
I'll go first:

What about you?

Why You Should Fund Kickstarter Projects

You come up with an amazing idea. You work on it non-stop. You get other people involved. You work harder. Your idea starts to take form and then it's almost ready to be out there in the world. The only problem? You need money. So what do you do? You turn to Kickstarter

Throwing a few dollars at a project might not seem like a big deal, but that money helps to make someone's idea a reality, and there's nothing better than helping someone's dreams come true. If you agree with me, then you've probably funded a project or two as well. So far I've funded 6 projects (5 of which are books of some sort).

I'll be honest, the first time I heard about Kickstarter, I didn't think I would ever fund someone's project. Why would I want to give someone my money, even if I did get something in return? How could I be sure I would get what it stated? But then I realized that I would want someone to throw a few dollars my way if I came up with a cool idea and put it on Kickstarter.
So why fund a Kickstarter project?

First, because it means that YOU helped make that project, whether it's a graphic novel, backpack, film, or mug, a success. By giving just a little bit of money (or a lot, depending on what it is you're funding) you can help someone's idea become a real thing and it's always cool seeing your name as a backer. It makes me happy and proud to know I helped someone.

Second, you get something awesome in return! And obviously, that's a big perk. You're funding a project not just because you like the idea but because you want it. I totally see a Kickstarter project and think gimmegimmegimme. It's wonderful when you open your mailbox and see the fruition of the project in your hands.

Third, you're supporting artists, designers, writers, musicians, photographers, gamers, and cool, creative people. You get a behind the scenes look at the creative process while the project is going on. And the people behind successful projects sometimes create more projects that you can also back.
and Terminal Protocol (this one's still going!).

Have you ever funded a Kickstarter project?

Dear Reader, Who Are You? Pt. 4

I'm currently in Pittsburgh! Are you following my adventures on Instagram?

I'm so excited for this summer! The past month has been crazy busy and I'm definitely not one of those people that glorifies being busy. In fact, I hate being busy. It kind of stresses me out when I have too much on my schedule, so this summer I want to relax, read a lot (which I would do anyway), hang out with friends, take trips into the city, go to museums, and relax even more.

I would love to know:

  • current favorite drink
  • the book would you bring to a deserted island
  • what I wished I'd done sooner
  • a summer goal
  • currently reading

I'll go first:

  • iced chai latte or the Starbucks s'more's frappuccino
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban or Attachments
  • hang out with other bloggers because yay fun
  • downsize my closet
  • Before Tomorrowland

So who are you?

Are You An Introvert?

I could write a novel about how Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain (which was the Novel Tea Book Club pick for this month) has made me see introversion and myself in a new light, but I figured I would talk about a small portion of the book: the section where Cain mentions self-monitoring.

When I read this chapter (Chapter 9) it's like a lightbulb when off in my head. I thought, Yes, that's me! I do this! I finally knew the term for what I was doing (ie. self-monitoring) and that I obviously wasn't the only one acting more extroverted than they really are.

Self-monitoring is when you purposefully act differently in social situations, ie. more extroverted.
"It turned out that the introverts who were especially good at acting like extroverts tended to score high for a trait that psychologists call 'self-monitoring.' Self-monitors are highly skilled at modifying their behavior to the social demands of a situation. They look for cues to tell them how to act."
I read this read the above paragraph and knew that this is 100% me! I've had people tell me that I'm outgoing and that I'm not shy at all, which I've always thought was strange since I would never ever use the term outgoing to describe myself. But now I saw that I was self-monitoring. I used my friendly demeanor to cover my introversion. I walk into a room and subconsciously look at the people around me for social cues on how I should act. I'm "accommodating myself to situational norms." I know that most people do this, but now I see that I'm pretty good at it (AKA a high self-monitor).
Are you an introvert?
Do you self-monitor?

What Kind of Energy Do You Bring to a Room?

**This is a reposted blog article from May 2013. I brought it out of the archives
because I thought it would be interesting to get new feedback on it.**

I had an interesting conversation with my friend Brittany a really long time ago (January, I think), but it's been stuck in my head ever since. She told me about an article she read where the person talked about the energy you bring into a space. When I was searching online, I found this blog post; apparently the concept was mentioned on Oprah but originates from Jill Nolte Taylor's book My Stroke of Insight.

Anyway, it's an interesting concept to think about: If there were a group of people in a room and you walked in what sort of energy would you bring to the room? In essence, how do you make others feel?

It's a great question to ask yourself and then an honest friend. What kind of energy do you think you bring to a room? What kind do you want to bring to a room? And then what of energy do you actually bring?

In the back of my mind, while Brittany and I were talking, I was hoping she would say that my energy is friendly and warm, and that I make her feel accepted. Luckily, she said exactly what I hoped she would!

What kind of energy do you bring to a room?

Dear Reader, Who Are You? Pt. 3

I want to start this year on a strong foot by asking about you guys! I seriously love the responses I got from the last two Dear Reader posts. They're fascinating and fun to read and make me wish that I could meet all of you in person. We could all meet at Alice's Tea Cup, drink tea, eat scones, and talk about our lives and our favorite books. If only.

I would love to know:

  • your most important New Year's resolution
  • a book that spoke to you recently
  • a song your obsessed with right now
  • a city you want to travel to
  • your word for 2015

I'll go first:

So who are you?

Do You Have Recurring Dreams?

Do you have recurring dreams?

I'm pretty good at remembering my dreams from the night before and most are random (talking to people at work, driving, meeting faceless guys that I like and whom I wish were real, taking blog pictures, and manifestations of worries, like doing something wrong at work or being late for appointments), but over the years I've had a few recurring dreams.

There are only three dreams that I've experienced two or three times.

ONE | I'm at summer camp and I'm in the woods near these wooden cabins, but everything is underwater, as if that's perfectly normal. It's dark and silent and I'm hiding underneath something because I know that someone is coming after everyone at the camp. Once in the dream I was just hiding, but the second time I was pulled from underneath and tried to scream and then I woke up.

What makes this dream strange is that I hardly ever have nightmares. I think this dream came about because I went to summer camp years ago when I was 11 or 12 and there was this rumor about someone killing people in the cabins in the woods.

TWO | Ever since I went to Israel back in 2011, I've dreamed three times that I've been late for a flight back to Israel. In real life I like being prepared and pack days before I go somewhere, but in the dream the flight is hours away and I haven't packed yet and I'm a stressed out mess. One time I had this dream and I found out that I was going to Israel only the day before.

THREE | The weirdest one of all: I jump off the ground and fly into the sky. It's late at night and I fly over New York City, admiring all of the lights. I land. I jump off the ground, but it's a little harder to do so. I fly. I land again. This time I can't jump up and fly anymore.

I've had this dream two times now, but not for many years. Every time I have this dream, at first it's so easy to fly and I love it, but as the dream goes on it gets harder and harder to get my feet off the ground. Strange, right?

Do you have recurring dreams?
I would love to know what your dreams are!

On Being "Fake" (Or Why You Should Like What You Like)

I've been thinking about what it means to be "fake" or not a lot recently. I think it all started when I bought my new camera in early July. You see, I've been thinking about someone who used to be a friend because she was (and no doubt still is) into photography.

But let's go back a bit. We were in high school and this friend started getting really into photography. She started using a camera and making interesting short videos. She would talk about cinematography and composition of a frame and all that a lot.

The only problem is that I was young. My other friends were young, and behind her back we talked about how she was being "fake" because she just started getting into something she wasn't into before. In reality, I thought it was all really cool and I liked that she was trying something new. How else are you supposed to discover things that you love if you don't try something you've never tried before?

But I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to seem like I was taking sides. When in fact I was and didn't know it. (Or maybe chose to ignore that.)

I think about that time and feel kind of guilty for not saying anything. Now I know better. Now I know that it's good to stand up and say what you think, even if it means that one of your friends gets mad at you for a day; and that being interested in many different things is wonderful and fun. If I hadn't discovered blogging I wouldn't have found something I love.

And if you're wondering, I didn't lose her as a friend because of this. We remained friends for a few years after high school, but eventually parted ways. But that's a different story.

Do you have anything friendship-wise that you regret?

Dear Reader, Who Are You? Pt. 2

The last Dear Reader post was absolutely wonderful! I loved reading your responses and getting to know you guys better! It was like sitting in a little cafe and chatting with friends. I especially loved seeing what you all aspire to be and the two words to describe yourself. Each answer was so wildly different, which I think is great and shows that we're all unique. Yes, we're all special snowflakes!

I want to know more about you guys!

I would love to know:
  • your favorite flower or plant
  • a TV show you love, or one that you hate
  • something you're afraid of
  • if you could only wear one print for the rest of your life, what would it be?
  • a celebrity you would love to meet
I'll go first:
  • roses
  • lately I've been loving Young & Hungry (so funny!)
  • the dark and I'm not a fan of bugs (ew)
  • florals
  • Emma Stone
So who are you?

Dear Reader, Who Are You?

I can't help but feel that I talk about myself a lot on this blog. You're probably thinking, Sara, that's allowed. It's your blog after all. Or maybe some of you are thinking that I don't talk enough about myself on this blog. I'm a shy person and in real life it takes a little while for me to open up, so maybe that translated to here.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is I want to know who you guys are!

If you feel comfortable, I would love to know:
  • how old you are
  • what your job is and/or what you aspire to be one day
  • what your favorite color is
  • the one food and/or dessert you can't live without
  • & two words that describe you

I'll go first:
  • 24
  • social media coordintator / aspire to be a published author also
  • purple
  • broccoli cheddar soup / taro root frozen yogurt
  • friendly / dreamer

So who are you?

Blogger Q&A

I was tagged by Chelsea of Chels & The City to do this blogger Q&A, so I thought it would be fun to answer some questions so that you can get to know me a little better.

ONE | If you could live any place in the world, where would it be?
I've always wanted to live in London! I've never been to England, but I have this feeling that I would love it there.

TWO | What do you miss most about being a kid?
Honestly, not having to worry about money. Or anything really. Kids have it easy.

THREE | Who or what inspires you?
Stories, photographs, and artwork. I get inspired by the words I read and the pictures I see. Ideas come to me as I read or when I'm perusing Pinterest or looking at a painting. I'm a visual person.

FOUR | Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
In a month, I'll be 25, so at 35 I hope I have a job that I love (still working at Westchester Magazine would be awesome), married to a kind, lovable, funny guy, and have two kids.

FIVE | Your 50th birthday party- who's invited?
My husband, my kids, and all my amazing friends!

SIX | What are your strengths?
I pride myself on being friendly and kind, on not judging people, and on making others feel comfortable. I'm also an awesome listener.

SEVEN | What are things you want to improve on?
Since my job is a social one -- talking to people, going to events, etc. -- I want to get better at being a social person and being outgoing. It doesn't come naturally, but I'm trying. It helps that everyone at work is so friendly and hilarious.

EIGHT | Places you've traveled to?
Obviously the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT), Pennsylvania, Boston, Albuquerque, Washington D.C., Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Niagara Falls (both sides), and the coolest of them all: Israel.

NINE | What is a routine you could never do without?
Before, I go to sleep I like to check Instagram since I find it calming and read a chapter or two of whatever book I'm currently reading.

TEN | What was an act of kindness shown towards you that caught you by surprise?
The most recent thing I can think of is that my step-mom Janet got me a Starbucks gift card for getting a job. I thought it was a really sweet little treat.

ELEVEN | List some of the best times in your life in less than one minute. ready...go! (don't cheat!) Anytime I hang out with my friends or brothers, Disney World with Jackie at twelve, Israel with Avra three years ago, Orlando with my family, playing cards with my brothers and grandparents every other week, mother-daughter days and father-daughter days, and having adventures with friends in NYC.

I tag: Jackie, MartieNaomi, Kristin, Sharon, Lix, Nikki, Elana, Lynn & Angie.

How Do You Describe Your Style?

I saw this post about having a signature style on Lauren Conrad's blog and it made me think about my own style. I definitely have a look that's all my own; I know what clothing and colors I like, and conversely what I would never put on my body, but it's still hard to define it. I know what my style is, but actually using words to spell it out was harder than I thought.

Here's what I came up with:
  1. Colorful (I love all colors, except for orange)
  2. A dash of nerdy chic (this mostly applies to my love of glasses and cardigans)
  3. Comfortable (jeans and flats are my jam)
What three words / phrases would you use to describe your style?

No One Expects Me To Write Mystery

And I kind of love it.

A few semesters ago, I was getting to know two writers from my workshop and we started talking about whether we thought someone in our workshop would write the kind of story we thought they would. At the time, it had been halfway through the semester, so we had read a piece from every person and therefore knew what kind of fiction they wrote.

Of course, writers don't always stick to one genre. My two novels are very different -- one alternative history murder mystery, the other YA fantasy. But based on what we had read in class and based on the person's personality, age, etc., we talked about if we had expected them to write in that particular genre or subject.

We had guessed correctly on most people, but not all. Fantasy for this girl? Yes. Family drama for this man? Yes. Magical realism for this woman? Yes. Literary prose for this man? Nope.

Curious about what they would say about me writing a murder mystery on a tough subject, I asked, "What about me?"

"You surprised me," one of them said.

That made me smile. It equally caught me off guard and made me happy. It was like I was hiding a little secret about myself and I liked it. I liked that it was unexpected. I guess it's nice to shock people a little bit. Now when I tell people what I'm writing about, it's interesting to see if it surprises them. I get a kick out of it.

Have you ever told someone something about yourself that surprised them?
Care to share what it was?

Six Things I Can't Live Without + Sponsor: Dream Mo(o)re

Besides all the necessities, like food and shelter, family and friends, I wanted to do a fun blog post on the six things I can't live without.

1. Computer / iPad

This is really obvious since I'm a blogger, but I couldn't survive without my computer. I'm tagging my iPad onto this because it's like an extension of my computer. Many of the things I do on my computer I do on my iPad. When I'm not blogging, I'm writing on my computer or checking blogs or watching movies or listening to music. If I'm not on my computer, I'm reading or watching TV on my iPad (thank you, iBooks, Overdrive, and Optimum apps!).

2. Lip Balm

Despite how much water I drink, my lips always seem to be chapped. Burt's Bees and Blistex are old friends of mine, but I've recently started using eos lip balms, Korres lip butter, and Glory Boon lip balm. I'm always reaching for one of these products, and I keep one or two in my bag.

3. Pen & Paper

When I have an idea, it needs to be written down or it will be lost forever. It will be like I never had it. What was that genius idea I had two seconds ago? No idea. Pen and paper must go with me everywhere. A cute little notebook is a must. These seven year pens are the best!

4. Blush

I love make up, but if I had to take one thing with me on a deserted island it would be blush, specifically Cover Girl's Blush in Classic Pink. Though if it's a tropical deserted island I don't think I would need it. Blush makes me look like I'm awake and alive. Coming in close second is black eyeliner. Most days if I need to rush out the door, all I put on is a swipe black eyeliner and blush. Two minutes and done.

5. Books

Do all the books in the world count as one thing? I'm sure I could survive without books, but I wouldn't be happy about it, and I don't want to try. I read almost every single day and if I don't read on a given day it was because I was watching too much TV or just too damn tired. One of my favorites is the Word Cloud Classics version of Pride and Prejudice. The rubbery cover is too cool.

6. Cardigans

My favorite clothing item, plain and simple. When I don't know what to wear, I reach for a cardigan, a cute shirt, and jeans. It's my go-to outfit and there are an endless combination of colors and ways to wear this, despite this outfit consisting of only three things. If the cardigan is purple then that's even better.

I would love to see your six things! If you do this post, be sure to comment with a link or tag me on Twitter (@sincerelysara22).

Fifteen Weird Things About Me

So I thought I would share a few random things about myself today for no reason other than I thought it would be fun! It's pretty hard to get to know someone when you only see them through a computer screen. You don't know my mannerisms or how I'm always touching my hair if it's down or that I make jokes when the conversation feels awkward, so I figured this might help you get to know me more.

Or you can check out my Q&A over here

1. I can't sleep on sheets (for some reason I find them uncomfortable), so instead sleep on a soft blanket, while also having a blanket over me of course.

2. I touch my nose a lot. Not in a finger up my nose way. I have an oily nose, which isn't helped by the fact that I wear glasses, so I tend to wipe the top of my nose (the part that my glasses sit on) to get rid of the oil. It's a weird habit that I should probably stop.

3. I don't like peanut butter. Or mushrooms. Or olives. Or most red meat. I have the occasion hamburger and strip of bacon though.

4. I prefer to write with black pens, which is why my username when I wrote Harry Potter fan fiction was blackink8922

5. My favorite scents are light and musky with a hint of floral.

6. Before I go to sleep, I like to read the articles on the TV Guide app. You know how much I love TV, so is it any surprise? I love reading about my favorite shows. (And getting my Entertainment magazine is a highlight of my week.) I also loving reading novels in bed. It's so relaxing being snuggled up with a good book.

7. I could re-watch Harry Potter, Letters to Juliet, Stardust, Pitch Perfect, Ever After, Tangled, and Pride & Prejudice a million times and never get bored. I'm not a super romantic person, but I just love these movies so much!

8. I need to write down any ideas that come my way immediately or they're gone for good.

9. I don't know how to bake cookies or muffins or anything since the oven has been broken in my apartment since I was little, which means my mom never taught me. I guess this means I have to teach myself.

10. Singing in my car to the radio makes me happy. I don't care if people see me singing. I'll never see those people again. Unless I do, and then I'm sure it would be awkward, but luckily that's never happened.

11. Singing about random things in my life like Jess of New Girl also makes me happy. :)

12. I can see blood in person and be fine, but seeing blood on TV totally creeps out. I have no idea why.

13. If my to-do list or any notes are messily written, I have to re-write them to make them look neat and pretty.

14. I like reading while on the toilet. Yep, you read that right. I tend to get an upset stomach a lot, so my solution is to sit and read until everything's better. Plus, no one can bother you or burst in while you're in the bathroom.

15. I'm addicted to using lip balm! All.the.time. My new favorite is eos' pomegranate raspberry lip balm. The sphere shape is really awesome.

What are some weird things about you?

BeauCoo: A Body Positive (#BoPo) Community

**This is a sponsored post, but all opinions are my own.**
Get the FREE app: iPhone & Android

BeauCoo is an inspiring, non-judgmental, body-positive (#BoPo) place where women can share their outfits and recent fashion finds. It's not just an app or website, it's a community for women that focuses on feeling good while also looking good. We all want to look good, but I've always believed that looking good comes from feeling good about ourselves too.

It's so refreshing to go onto the BeauCoo app and find women who are the same size as me. It makes me feel included instead of insecure about not being skinny. While I love Instagram and Pinterest, all I see are skinny girls in beautiful clothes who make me feel bad about the body I have. Those thoughts of, "Why don't you look like them? Why aren't you thin?" start to invade my mind. When I go onto BeauCoo for outfit inspiration, it genuinely makes me feel amazing to see women who look like me. If those lovely ladies who have the same measurements that I do are confident, then it shows that I can also be just as fierce and self-assured.

BeauCoo makes me feel honored to have this busty, curvy, petite body of mine!
Not only does the BeauCoo website and app, and the women who use it, inspire me, but they also give me new ways to dress myself every morning. If a dress looks good on someone with the same measurements, there's a pretty good chance that the same dress or a similar-looking one would look good on me too. BeauCoo is helpfully ridding us of the problem of ordering ill-fitting clothes online by having its members show us what size to get before clicking the buy button.

You can post your own outfit photos to hopefully inspire someone else, and can also include fitting room pictures to rave about a particular piece or warn people before buying something. Wouldn't you like to know if that shirt you've been eyeing fits wonderfully, or if it's too tight in the arms? I sure would.

You can "like" other people's photos and even "want" what their wearing, so that you have inspiration for later. One of the best things about the app is that you can browse by fit match (you know if the person is a fit match if they have the little pink measuring tape in the corner), by everyone, or by clothing type. BeauCoo makes it easy to find exactly what you're looking for.
As part of BeauCoo's devotion to body positivity, they have started The Stories Project, a place where women share inspiring stories and messages. In these videos, women reveal their poignant and at times funny thoughts on clothes, media, and self-image to encourage others to live a more body positive life.

I want to invite you all to take the #BoPo Pledge! What is the #BoPo Pledge? On BeauCoo's site, it says:
By signing the Body Positive Pledge, you agree promote acceptance and to be a body positive warrior. To stand up against body shaming, stand up for women and share the message to anyone and everyone you can.
Take the #BoPo Pledge here and watch the video on the meaning of body positivity!

Be sure to follow me on BeauCoo!
