Would You Ever Give Up On Love?

While at my cousin's bridal shower, a few relatives of mine were talking about relationships. One of the women said that if her new relationship didn't work out she would give up on finding someone and just be by herself. And the other two women said they would probably do the same. I was a kind of surprised at the idea.

I know that they have all been or are in long-term serious relationships (two of them are divorced and one of them has been in a serious relationship for over 20 years), but they said that it's a lot of effort to constantly go on dates with new people, to find someone they really like, and to be with that person. Even though I myself have never been in a relationship, I can understand that it's a lot of work, but I would've thought that it was worth it to find someone that you have a strong connection to and that you want to grow old with.

The women are only in their fiftes and sixties, so I think they're too young to give up on love. I would hope that even at eighty and beyond, one could still find romance.

What do you think? Would you ever give up on love? After how many relationships would you just be by yourself? Or would you never stop trying to find your soulmate?

  1. personally, love is so important to me, it is the most important thing in the world to me. I don't think i could ever give up on it. however i can see how someone else would. love it a lot of hard work, and it almost always ends in heartbreak (the only way it wont end in heartbreak is if you die before your spouse). So i can see why someone would not want to put all that effort in just to get hurt in the end. i know that i could never do that. maybe when im 80 i might not go out and look for love, but i would always be open to it if it came to me. you are never ever to old for love.

    1. So true! Love always ends in heartbreak, but I think it's still worth it try and find it.

  2. It's hard for me to imagine giving up on love, so to speak. To me, it seems like giving up on love is one short step before giving up on life as a whole. Of course, there are many different kinds of love and at times constantly putting yourself out there to see romantic love can be exhausting... But that doesn't mean you should write it off entirely. I mean, never say never, right?!

    1. I agree that if you give up on love you're giving up on life...and happiness! That's not to say you can't be happy if you're single because I'm single and I'm very happy, but in the long run I want to find love and I think it's an important part of life.

  3. I would never give up on love. I mean, even if you don't find the partner for life, there's always this love that you have for your friends and family etc and this gives so much to you. Being with people I love makes me strong and happy and I can't see how anyone would give that away. However, with romantic love it can be different. I know what unrequited love feels like but I'd never give up on it. If I love a person I can't simply stop that. They'll always be a part of me no matter what. On the other hand I understand that there are people which you really, really love but you wouldn't want a relationship with them. I have this one friend for example and everyone always thinks we're in love because we cuddle and we joke around in a way that sometimes feels like flirting and I've often asked myself why I'm not dating him because he's a lovely guy and if one of my friends started dating him I'd be so happy for her because he must be a gorgeous boyfriend. But I myself couldn't date him. I can't even find real reasons for that but I just know that I don't want it. This is weird and I get confused every time I think about it but it taught me that there can be so many different kinds of love because love is complicated and it's just between two people and noone could ever really understand what's between him and me but I know what it is.
I'd never give up on love. I've realised that it really is the strongest power in the world and that's what makes it so beautiful and dangerous at the same time. Because when you give someone your heart you give them permission to break it. And I still believe that there are enough people who are not going to breakt it.
